Buttram chosen Athens, Tenn., mayor

ATHENS, Tenn. — Councilman Hal Buttram is the city’s new mayor.

Council members voted 3-2 tonight for Mr. Buttram to replace John Proffitt, who did not seek re-election Nov. 4.

The position is largely ceremonial, but the mayor does lead the city meetings, represent the city and oversee work sessions.

Mr. Buttram was supported by Vice Mayor Bo Perkinson, who also was re-elected to his post, and by Councilwoman Ann Davis.

Councilman Dick Pelley, who also sought the mayor’s seat, was supported by Councilwoman Shannon Alvey

Several members stated they hoped the disagreements often seen in council work sessions and meetings could be overcome.
