“The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.” — William James FUNDRAISER
ORANGE GROVE Center’s annual Jackie Tyber Memorial Golf Tournament fundraiser was a big success, said Leslie Smith, Orange Grove spokeswoman. “Proceeds from the tournament are reserved for renovations to the Tyber Building at Orange Grove Center,” she said.
Savage Glascock of The Glascock Company, an auction group, said Jackie Tyber was a client at Orange Grove. “His parents were instrumental in the origins of Orange Grove.” “I met Jacke in the mid-1970s when I was a counselor at the Orange Grove summer camp. Jackie was around 20 at the time, but functioned at about an 8-to-12 years old. He couldn’t speak clearly, but he could communicate with body language and his hands. I got to know him and soon realized he was a really sweet person.”
A recent ceremony recognized sponsors Prebul Chrysler Jeep Dodge, The Acropolis, Edward’s Jewelry, Beasley Distributing Company and Athens Distributing Company, Ms. Smith said.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the Tyber Building Fund should send contributions to Orange Grove Center, c/o Tyber Building Fund, 615 Derby St., Chattanooga, TN 37404. They also may visit the center or call 423-308-1160.
Orange Grove is a private, non-profit organization serving adults and children with developmental disabilities, according to orangegrovecenter.com. Orange Grove was established in 1953 by families of children with intellectual disabilities in Hamilton County who desperately needed educational services. The center serves nearly 700 individuals. A VETERAN’S DAY program for residents and staff was presented at Alexian Village. The program began with posting of colors by the Howard School of Academics and Technology’s Navy Junior ROTC color guard led by Artone Murphy and Jawana Fugate.
Bill Hewitt, president of the Greater Chattanooga Council Navy League, and Army veteran Brother Andrew Thome of Alexian, founded the program.
“All Alexian veterans were honored for their service before the group heard stories from World War II through the Vietnam War,” said event spokeswoman Robin Derryberry.
Speakers were military veterans Jack Spittler, the Rev. Jim Wilbanks, George Phillips and Ed Biga.
“Veterans Day is always a very special occasion for us,” said Jeff Ott, president and CEO of Alexian Village of Tennessee. “It gives all of us the opportunity to pay tribute to the world’s greatest generation and to thank them for all they did to ensure the freedoms we enjoy today.”
