Chattanooga: Clampett invited to play in Classic
Veteran golfer and television commentator Bobby Clampett has received a sponsor’s exemption into the Chattanooga Classic to be played Oct. 16-19 at Black Creek Club.
Clampett, 48, was a two-time player of the year while at Brigham Young and played on the PGA Tour for years before turning his attention to television and teaching. He is playing in this Nationwide Tour event to help gear up for joining the Champion’s Tour when he turns 50.
“I haven’t competed much since 1995, so I have to get back into that swing of things and the feeling of competing,” said Clampett, who has tied for 39th and missed a cut this summer. “Young guys and Nationwide Tour guys are very capable and much stronger competition than the Champion’s Tour. I’m excited about playing in general.”
Chattanooga Classic officials previously award an exemption to University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Jonathan Hodge and have two exemptions remaining. “He brings a name that’s well known to golf fans and will be a nice mix for us,” tournament manager Sam Woolwine said of Clampett who played in Chattanooga when the Classic was PGA Tour event. “He, at one time, was the best amateur in the country.”
